Died October 18, 1983, Madras, Tamil Nadu
Major teams India, Andhra, Bengal, Maharashtra, Mumbai, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh
Playing role Batsman

At a time when not many Indians could face pace bowlers well, Vijay Manjrekar was a very good player of fast bowling. He debuted against England in Calcutta and instantly established himself as a player of immense talent. Even after losing his peak form over the years, Manjrekar's footwork and technique remained impeccable and praiseworthy. Like other great Indian batsmen, he too was small in structure and a great executioner of the hook and cut shots. His two best Test series were against New Zealand in India in 1955-56 where he scored 386 runs at an average of 77.20 and against England in India in 1961-62, having scored 586 runs at an average of 83.71. He made seven Test centuries. At Bombay in 1964-65 his scores of 59 and 39 were important contributions for India's first Test win over Australia.

Apart from shining with the ball, Vijay Manjrekar also was a part time off spinner and wicketkeeper. He represented many states in the Ranji Trophy - Bombay, Bengal, Andhra, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Maharashtra. He has 3,734 Ranji Trophy runs, including twelve hundreds in Ranji Trophy. Manjrekar's son, Sanjay, was also a Test player. livescore.warofcricket.com provides the profile of Vijay Manjrekar and other cricketers around the world.
