As one of the finest batsmen to have ever played for India, Gundappa Viswanath is a legend of the game. He was known for his ability to hold ground when wickets around him tumbled. He was a prolific scorer of runs who could play shots all over the ground. Playing along side cricketing stalwarts such as Sunil Gavaskar, Gundappa Viswanath never allowed himself to be over shadowed by them. He is particularly remembered for his performance in 1975-’76 against the West Indies when the West Indian fast bowlers reduced the Indian batting line up to ashes. The only person who put up a challenge was this bulky right hander, scoring runs in defiance of the pace of Andy Roberts and the like. In his 91 Tests, Gundappa Viswanath scored 6080 runs at a very impressive average of 41.93. He once also had the honor of leading the team briefly in 1979-’80. After his retirement, Gundappa Viswanath was appointed an ICC match referee.
