As an explosive batsman who once topped the Coopers and Lybrand rating, Dilip Vengsarkar was an integral member of the Indian side many years, including the period when India were world champions. He represented India in 116 Tests and 129 ODIs. His performances in Tests have been marginally better than the ODIs. He scored 6868 Test runs at 42.13 and in ODIs scored 3507 runs at an average of 34.73.
He was made captain of the Indian side after the 1987 World Cup and though he had performed exceptionally well in the years between 1985 and 1987, Dilip Vengsarkar was not able to carry the good form into his captaincy. The team performed poorly under him and after a humiliating tour of the West Indies in 1989 he lost job.
Dilip Vengsarkar was Wisden Cricketer of the year in 1987 and was also honored by the Indian Government with the prestigious Padma Shri award.
