A very useful top order batsman, Simon Katich has played over 20 tests and 40 ODIs for Australia and helped the team on many occasions to clinch victories with his gritty batting and handy chinaman bowling. Having made his one-day debut at age 25, he had a lot of hard work and a constant race with time ahead of him. He impressed everyone with his stylish batting in the domestic circle in 1998-99 when he accumulated 1039 first-class runs, together with 115 in the final won by Western Australia, and found a berth in the national team on tour to Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe. But he could not carry his luck forward, as a series of illnesses forced him to stay out of the game. He bounced back soon and made his test debut in the 2001 Ashes series. He did not get too many matches to prove his talent and had to wait for Steve Waugh's retirement to find a place in the side. Following his inclusion in the national side, Simon Katich has also found new honors as captain of New South Wales.
